I’ve seen some criticism about “giving cookies” to people/characters for treating women like human beings, and how we shouldn’t give special praise for basic human decency. I completely disagree.
Celebrate the characters and traits you value in the media, and maybe we’ll see more of it. Even better, maybe someone who never thought about these things will become more conscious about how to respect people in their own life. In a patriarchal, anti-intellectual society, the average person does need reminding that if you show gratitude and respect where it’s due, people will show gratitude and respect for you in return. If we had more heroes like Bolin in pop culture, maybe men wouldn’t think showing emotion and admiring a woman’s strength was a sign of weakness.
